Anora D Henderson, M.D., was awarded the prestigious University of South Dakota (USD) Sanford School of Medicine (SSOM) Department of Medicine 2019 Edward J. Batt, M.D., Memorial Award for Outstanding Faculty Member. Susan M. Anderson, M.D., Associate Professor and Chair of the USD Family Medicine Department, presented the award.
The award identifies Dr. Henderson’s years of incomparable work with Frontier And Rural Medicine (FARM) medical students during their rotation in Winner.
The Batt Memorial Award was established in 1978 to honor long -time family physician, Edward Batt, M.D. The recipient of the Batt award must be a clinical faculty member of the school for a minimum of three years prior to selection and have consistently taught in one or more departmental clerkships (for example, Senior Family Medicine Clerkship, Sophomore Preceptorship, etc.). The Batt award honoree must also receive excellent evaluations of their teaching.
Offering elective clerkship experiences to students, providing service to school on committees, and active participation in professional medical societies are all considered in the selection process.
Award recipients are chosen from the faculty by the leadership, faculty and the Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. The Edward J. Batt, M.D., Memorial Award recipient receives both a personal plaque and a permanent plaque, displayed in the Family Medicine Department. The Batt Memorial Award is the only award honoring clinical faculty given by the Department of Family Medicine on an annual basis.
